Adam

Challenge: Trouble Highlighting Skills and Career Progression
Writer: David West

Adam had worked in the IT field for more than 15 years and 12 of those at the same company. Feeling his career stagnating at the same, non-technical company, he felt he needed to move on. In designing his own resume, he had trouble highlighting his skills and career progression in a clear, concise format. Adam’s resume had long lists of technical tools, skills, and experience interspersed with block paragraphs of duties. Two features often listed as most off-putting for hiring authorities.

Through a careful rewrite and focus on inviting formatting, we were able to create a concise, informative, and appealing resume showcasing Adam’s skills, accomplishments, experience, and career progression.

  • Reorganized and simplified the “Areas of Expertise” into two more appropriate sections, Core Competency and Technical Proficiencies
  • Consolidated a 2 ½-page resume to under 2 pages by capitalizing on real estate and making strategic use of bullet points and white space to lead the reader along in an effortless retrieval of information

John

Challenge: Not Receiving Interviews
Writer: Michael Aperauch

John was an executive-level professional pursuing a C-suite role in Sales and Marketing. But his resume, both in its aesthetic style and its content, reflected a more mid-level applicant. He received callbacks and emails, but only for positions that he might have considered over a decade ago. He wasn’t being noticed for the roles he wanted, and knew he was qualified for.

After reviewing his resume, the issue was clear: a junior-level format that focused less on achievements, and more on responsibilities, and did not lean heavily enough on executive keywords.

How We Helped - Key changes
  • Collaborated with John over the phone, discussing his roles and helping him reevaluate his career history and think of achievements he hadn’t included.
  • Prioritized accomplishments that could be quantified with numerical figures, including the number of team members he led, and how much revenue he generated in each role.
  • Reframed existing responsibilities as key contributions or accomplishments that delivered more significant value to the company.
  • Added some color to show the level of effort John could bring to the table, something his original (which is a more basic Word template) lacked.
  • Focused on including keywords that were more relevant to a senior-level executive.

Lori

Challenge: Career Change
Writer: Shelby Harayda

Lori was working in the finance field for several years before deciding to return into the marketing field. She needed help highlighting her past marketing and sales background that was from 15+ years ago. As a result, Lori’s resume had too much information focusing on her finance experience rather than the current industry she was applying to, making it difficult for a hiring manager to quickly scan and understand what career path she was seeking.

We started off by researching the types of positions Lori was targeting. Her current resume included too many bullet points of general duties rather than focusing on accomplishments and transferable experience.

How We Helped - Key changes
  • Added detailed qualifications summary and list of core competencies that focused on relevant skills/abilities to target industry for better ATS results
  • Reorganized and reformatted the job summary section by including short, concise paragraphs and bullet points selected achievements/accomplishments.
  • Developed “Additional Experience” section to strategically highlight relevant marketing experience without dates to avoid aging career history.
  • Reformatted “Educational Background” section to be reflected at the top of first page of the resume.
  • Corrected spacing and font inadequacies by streamlining overall format and utilizing white space to lead reader along effortlessly.
